My consultancy background

My background is in research, consultancy and counselling and I have a wide range of office skills including excellent administrative and organisational skills. Key skills include:

  • Reporting, reviewing (including proof reading) and presentation;
  • Bid writing;
  • Writing operating procedures and instructions;
  • Designing workshops including developing content, guidance and structure;
  • Facilitating focus groups and workshops with a range of aims such as learning, sharing or identifying opinion, sharing expertise, personal development, evaluation and reaching consensus;
  • Conducting qualitative interviews.

Employment

Jan 2011 – present: Nine Keys, Freelance Researcher and Writer

I work as a freelance writer and researcher. My key skills are technical and creative writing (online and print), editing and proofing, developing workbooks and toolkits, and conducting desk-based research such as telephone interviewing, reviewing, desk-top research and qualitative analysis. I undertake some face-to-face work such as running workshops and focus groups, or conducting interviews.

I have conducted work on behalf of ARC Counselling, Global Intelligence Alliance, Viewpoint Field and Studios, Rosslyn Research and SIS International Market Research, among others.

Sept 2007 – Dec 2011: Greenstreet Berman Ltd, Senior Consultant

Greenstreet Berman is a consultancy concerned with human factors and social policy. Most clients are Government departments or agencies, with some private sector clients. I project managed and (in addition to other research techniques) I led workshops and focus groups to gather personal and expert opinion and to evaluate projects carried out with Government funding.

Subject matter ranged from construction and building control/regulations, public and mental health, to health and safety, fire and environment. I conducted workshops and focus groups for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, Defra, Health and Safety Executive and Communities and Local Government.

May 2006 – Sept 2007: Teacher Support Network, Content Development Manager

I managed the re-launch of the Teacher Support Network (TSN) website and, simultaneously, the launch of the College and University Support Network (CUSN) website. My responsibilities included research among college and university staff to identify their needs in relation to the new CUSN charity and its website, as well as line management and on-going content management for the site.

Jan – April 2006: Greenstreet Berman Ltd, Senior Consultant (short-term contract)

I worked as a Senior Consultant on both qualitative and quantitative work within the areas of health and safety and human factors. This work mainly comprised targeted qualitative telephone interviews.

Sept 2004 – Dec 2005: Self-employed Consultant (short-term contracts)

I conducted research and wrote online material and paper-based toolkits for use by teachers. Issues were wide-ranging and included wellbeing, stress, health and safety, occupational health, mental health, addictions, religion, complementary therapies and sexuality. I also conducted an evaluation of service effectiveness.

June 2000 – Sept 2004: Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Policy Advisor

My first role within HSE was concerned with the development of policy for fire, agriculture, leisure and health and safety within the workplace. Key topics for my second role covered psychosocial issues including work-related stress, drugs and alcohol misuse in the context of the workplace, lone working and passive smoking.
